What is gluten free?

Due to increased awareness about different medical conditions and variety of dietary advice offered over the internet, world over increasingly gulten free diet is becoming very popular. From local shops to super markets, carts are flooded with gluten free products with some products claiming to be made at homes while other industries. In this article, we'll share some insights into benefits as well as risks of Gluten free diet and find out whether these foods really meant for general population.
What is gluten free?

Gluten, a protein composite found in food items such as wheat, barley, rye etc., affects genetically susceptible individuals worldwide. Gluten free products are only meant for these gluten sensitive patients. Celiac disease , a gluten-sensitive autoimmune disease of the small intestine, is one such condition which requires a life-long gluten free diet. The prevalence of Celiac disease has been estimated to be approximately 0.5%-1% in different parts of the world (as per the estimates published in 2012).

When an individual with Celiac disease ingests gluten (directly or indirectly) the lining of the small intestine, known as the “villi” (finger-like projections), becomes flattened over time. Once the villi are damaged, the absorption of essential nutrients is affected, leading to malnutrition and a number of other related illnesses which affect almost all organ systems of the body. Celiac disease patients may present gastrointestinal symptoms, extra-intestinal symptoms or in some cases no symptoms at all. The most common symptoms include gastrointestinal-related symptoms such as diarrhea, fatty diarrhea and weight loss (primarily due to malabsorption). Nearly, 50% of these patients present extra-intestinal symptoms, such as anemia, osteoporosis, dermatitis neurological problems and dental problems.

It is safe to say that Celiac is not an allergy, and if left untreated it can be life-threatening. The only known and available treatment is following a gluten-free diet i.e. the person has to completely remove all the sources of gluten from the diet. But given the presence of gluten in almost all the food items regularly consumed, adjusting your diet can be an overwhelming task.

In a Gluten free diet one has to eliminate all kinds of processed foods like bakery items, readymade sweets, chocolates, biscuits, cookies, ready-made soups etc. from one’s diet.

But coming on to the important question that what are the risks associated with gluten free diet i.e. why it should be taken by only those who need it. Everything, be it love, trust, medicines, etc. has their pros and cons. Similarly, following a gluten-free diet has both its advantages and disadvantages.

The good side

Gluten free diet reduces the damage and inflammation of the intestinal tract, which heals the mucosal lining. When the mucosal lining gets healed, the absorption of nutrients increases which decreases the risk of developing nutritional deficiencies. This makes a person healthy and lively. Higher quality grains like millets, ragi, quinoa, maize, etc. are introduced into the diet which increases the variety and nutritive value as well. Since, the patient is advised about the cross contamination concept and hidden gluten sources, they become more aware of food and develop habits of reading the food label. This also makes them aware about the other harmful components like excess sodium, trans. fat, cholesterol, etc. because munching on gluten free yet sodium rich foods is also equally harmful. So, following a diet which contains less of processed foods is healthier way to live for a person suffering from Celiac disease

Not so good side

Gluten free diet restricts all the wheat and wheat products. Due to this restriction, fear of negative reactions and some myths, people stop consuming cereals and other gluten free flours also which leads to reduced carbohydrate consumption and thus malnutrition. Eliminating too many foods and consumption of a nutrient deficient diet can cause weight loss. Lack of fiber from traditional sources can lead to digestive issues like constipation, irritable bowel disease, ulcers, etc. Also, gluten-free products may contain higher levels of fat and sugar, which often lead to weight gain.

Considering the risks associated one should consult a nutritionist nearby before going for a gluten free diet to ensure that the nutritional requirements of your body are fulfilled.

Top Cellulitis Treatment Tips

For many of us (let’s face it I’m talking to the ladies here) cellulite is an inevitable embarrassment. Although many women are probably currently breathing a sigh of relief as they pack away those summer skirts and bikinis, what about those ladies looking for some winter sun? Afterall, cellulite is the ultimate nemesis of the sexy swimsuit!

Well, whether you are looking for a quick fix for smooth legs during a winter holiday or a long term solution to obliterate lumpy skin before the next summer season, I am here to help. I am going to give you Top 3 Cellulitis Treatment.

Cellulite is the bane of my existence. Admittedly it is something I have always been prone to. Nevertheless, since the birth of my daughter it has been uncontrollable. I genuinely never knew that you could get those oh so noticeable lumps and bumps on your knees!

However, I should start by saying that believing orange peel skin is a result of being overweight is a complete misconception. I have been a professional dancer for most of my adult life. I have worked with everyone from showgirls to movie stars and believe me even toned, super thin women are not immune!

I can’t begin to tell you the amount of stunning ladies I have worked with all of whom have exceptional figures, yet are plagued by cellulite. This is because most of the time cellulite is simply down to genetics. If your mum suffers from it and your mum’s mum suffers from it, the likelihood is you will too, regardless of your size.

With that said, there are some factors of your diet which can also affect the appearance of your skin and we will go into this in a bit. So if cellulite is bringing you down, read on to find out what simple tricks you can try to beat the bumps.

What Is Cellulite?

Cellulite is basically little pockets of fat which lie below the skin. As this fat pushes against the connective tissue you are left with those familiar dimples. Cellulite does actually affect everyone, however it is more common among women. I know right, great for us.

Around 80% of women of all shapes and sizes suffer from cellulite. Believe it or not, those little dimples are not actually an indicator that you have an issue with body fat, but actually a problem with your connective tissue.

Connective tissue is like a web under your skin which should distribute your body fat evenly. But, cellulite happens when the connective tissue allows fat to build up in one place and not another. Hence the bumpy appearance.

What Causes Cellulite?

There are lots of things that can cause one person to have more cellulite than others. The unfortunate thing is many of these factors are simply out of our hands. Some reasons include:
  • Changes in hormones
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Diet
  • Genetics

Top Cellulitis Treatment Tips

Okay so I want to share with you a couple of things that may help you in reducing the appearance of cellulite, both temporarily and long term. Give them a go and let me know how you get on.
I am here to help. I am going to give you Top Cellulitis Treatment Tips.

Think About Diet and Exercise

Eating salad

Right so, I wanted to get this one out of the way. Although as mentioned, cellulite is not a condition solely for those who are overweight, there are diet and lifestyle factors that can make cellulite worse.

First of all, high diets of junk food, bad carbs are sugars are going to experience more cellulite. One demon is white carbs. White bread, white rice, white pasta. Unfortunately, a pizza may taste great on a saturday night while snuggled up to Britain’s Got Talent. But when it comes to cellulite it’s a case of ‘a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.’

If you are looking for a long term solution for cellulite, you really need to look at your diet and think about whether it could be improved. Clean eating is for sure the best thing to keep those dimples at bay. I’m not saying cut the carbs altogether, but switching to wholegrain is much better for you. Both inside and out.

Likewise in regards to fitness. The top and bottom of it is, although an exercise plan may not rid you of orange peel skin altogether, the more toned you are, the less dimpled you look.

Tip #1 Dry Brushing

When it comes to perfectly smooth skin, dry brushing may just be your best friend. Once or twice a day (before a shower is best) massage affected areas with a firm, dry brush. The massaging stimulates blood flow which helps reduce the appearance of cellulite. This will work immediately for a short period of time (good before a night out in your favourite mini skirt) but will also help long term if done regularly.

Tip #2 Apply Coffee

Caffeine is the biggest enemy of cellulite. Nothing works better in reducing its appearance both short and long term. This is why you will find many cellulite creams containing caffeine. Here are two excellent tips to try.

First of all make yourself a caffeine exfoliator. Use a cup of coffee grounds (I’m talking the good stuff you put in a coffee maker, not the instant stuff you get in jars) two tablespoons of sugar and some high grade virgin coconut oil. Mix it all up in an empty jar for a homemade body scrub.

Now, when you’re in the shower, get your dry brush out again (the one you just used before you got in remember!) Put a good dollop of your freshly made scrub on any cellulite prone area and give it a good old scrub with your brush. Do this a couple of times a week and you will start to notice long term positive effects.

The second thing you can try (this one gets a bit messy) is for a short term fix. Similarly to your scrub, get some coffee grounds and some high quality moisturiser. I used to do this with a collagen moisturiser and it worked wonders! Mix your coffee and moisturiser in a bowl (think the kind you use when dying your hair) and take it into the bathroom with some cling film…..bear with me.

This is best done standing in the shower/bath as it can be a bit of a nightmare, especially if you have light coloured furnishings! Also, maybe have some latex gloves handy. Apply the coffee mixture to your affected areas, really massage it in. Then wrap the area in the cling film. Now, leave it for around 20 minutes and rinse off with cold water.

The massaging again stimulates the blood flow and the caffeine tightens the skin, especially with that extra kick of cold water at the end. To be fair, everyone is different, but this used to work wonders for me if I had a dance job or photo shoot and I wanted to feel a little more confident.

Tip #3 Time to Tan

The fact is light skin appears more lumpy and bumpy than darker skin. Unfortunately, this is just a fact. So it doesn’t matter whether you get a natural tan that keeps your skin looking cellulite free year round or you slather yourself in fake tanner to look fabulous in a party dress. Having darker skin will reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Personally, especially as I get older and start to appreciate the long term affects of tanning on my skin, I love a good instant tan. With a little bit of practice on how to apply it properly (or even get someone to do it for you) it can really make you look and feel fabulous. My favourite is those graduating tanning moisturisers. This way your friends don’t see you as snow white one day and Beyonce the next!

At the end of the day, cellulite isn’t something that will affect your health. However, it can really pull down your confidence. Let’s face it, the better you feel about yourself, the more you tend to take care of yourself too! So any quick fix that works for you and gives you that little boost you need is a good thing.

If you have any home cellulite remedies of your own which work for you I’d love to hear about them in the comments below. It is always great to get feedback from experienced readers. Moreover, what works for you may be the answer for someone else.

The Dash Diet Plan

With new diets coming out so often, it tends to be hard to keep up with the newest fashions in eating. It can also be difficult to determine what will genuinely aid your health and what is just a fad. So in this article I decided to discuss the DASH diet, what it is and its pros and cons.

View image on Twitter

What is The DASH Diet?

DASH is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. High blood pressure (hypertension) is big problem for a lot of people and the DASH diet was thought up in an attempt to combat the issue.
The diet was designed to support research supported by the National Institute of Health or NIH. It has also been named the number 1 diet for the past six years. The Dash diet is also recommended by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
The diet encourages people to lower their intake of sodium, calcium and potassium and replace that with nutrient rich foods. People with high hypertension can benefit from lowering their blood pressure by a few points in as little as two weeks from following the DASH diet.
Although the DASH diet was initially intended for those with hypertension, its healthy eating plan also offers a number of other benefits. It is also thought that it can also prevent diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease.

The DASH Diet For Weight Loss

As noted, the DASH diet was originally intended for lowering blood pressure. However, it has a major emphasis on plant based eating, making fruits and vegetables the main source of nutrition. This not only makes this eating plan a great healthy option all round, but is a great plan for those looking to lose a few pounds. The large portion of fruits and vegetables means that meals are filling while remaining low on calories.
The diet is also protein rich which offers a number of benefits for weight loss:
  • Protein rich meals make you feel fuller for longer
  • Snacks and meals high in protein encourage weight loss while retaining lean muscle mass.

How to Start the DASH Diet

When starting this eating plan there are a few things you need to consider. First of all, what you eat will depend on the limits you intend to set yourself. If you are using the dash diet for weight loss, you may want to lower the allowed daily calories. The normal DASH diet allows around 2000 calories a day, for weight loss you may not want to allow yourself this many.
Also, the dash diet tends to be quite low in sodium, however, some people try to lower it even further.

What to Eat

Best 4 Leg Weight Workouts - Basic Exercises Women Should Include on

Leg day is often dreaded by many but is important for all. Both men and women alike need to work on both upper and lower body for symmetry. But for the ladies, leg day is the only way to get the Beyonce butt your craving. So check out these exercises that you must include in your workout, even the beginners.

Most people hate leg day. This is no more apparent than in those guys you see with the enormous upper body and legs like spindles. Obviously they think they are rocking their muscle tee, but truthfully they just look ridiculous. Therefore, regardless of who you are making sure you complete leg day is hugely important.
For many women, especially those new to working out the prospect of working out with a barbell is a scary prospect. Many women have the misconception that using weights will bulk them up. But the only way to get those great legs you’re dreaming about in time for that perfect Christmas party dress is to go hard on leg day.
That’s why I have picked four exercises that are going back to basics. Although there are so many workouts you can do, sticking to the original bodybuilding moves can be the best place to start.
These exercises most experienced workout gurus will be well aware of. But they are a great place to begin for the beginners! Plus, there is always room for variations to make workouts more advanced and interesting.

#1 - Barbell Deadlift

Now for a ladies new to working out, seeing a huge guy in the gym hammering out deadlifts can be a little intimidating. Don’t be put off girls! You too can deadlift like a complete pro.
Like everything start by getting your basic technique up to a good level. Start with just the barbell, no weights and have a friend spot you.
Tip - remember to get a good grip, keep your chest up and back arched. Drive through your heels in order to pull the weight upwards. Try 3 sets of 12 reps.

#2 - High Rep Squats

In honesty there is no better exercise for women who want great glutes than a good old fashioned squat!
Start off by getting a good squat technique without any weights. Once you are confident you have your technique down, you can add a barbell (without weight) carried across your shoulders.
It is great to start off with the assistance of a smith machine to help you with your balance and technique when incorporating weights into the mix. Over time you can add weight to the barbell as you progress and when you’re confident enough, move away from the smith machine altogether.
Try 3 sets of 15 reps for a great workout.

#3 - Leg Press

Ladies, don’t be afraid of the leg press machine. This is great for everyone but also a great place to start for beginners. There are many variations you can try to change up your workout, make your workout harder or just prevent boredom.
Start off with a traditional leg press with low weights to encourage good technique. Build up your weight and variations as you advance
Start with 3 sets of 10-12 reps.

#4 - Hamstring Curl

Hamstring curl is another great beginner exercise on leg day. With the assistance of a hamstring curl machine, it is an easy exercise to get right and get results.
Make sure your leg is fully stretched when performing this exercise for good technique and to get the best results. Remember to hold your contraction, take your time and don’t power through too quickly.
Try 3 sets of 15 reps.

So if you want to hit the upcoming party season with legs to kill for, you definately need to make sure you make leg day a priority. Remember, in the beginning you may be sore afterwards but this is normal.
Follow good workout practices to keep delayed onset muscular soreness (DOMS) at bay. Get enough protein and a good stretch post workout and treat yourself to a long hot bath to soothe those aching muscles on an evening. This will help you to get enough rest, which is crucial to aid recovery.
So try out these four basic leg workouts and let me know how you get on.

5 Best shampoo hair loss

Nothing is quite as discouraging as slow-growing or thinning hair. Each shampoo and dye commercial on the television seems like a slap in the face.
Print advertising seems to rely singularly on the awe and wonder inspired by long, silky tresses.
